France deplores Japan’s execution this morning of two prisoners, Junya Hattori and Kyozo Matsumura.

France reaffirms its unwavering opposition to the death penalty everywhere and in all circumstances, and is striving toward its definitive and universal abolition. Now that 140 countries have already renounced capital punishment, by law or in practice, France calls on Japan to follow on this path, to reestablish its de facto moratorium, and to continue the national debate on the future of the death penalty.
