Japan – France’s participation in the peace ceremonies at Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August 6, 2012)
France has decided to attend the peace ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9. It will be represented there by its ambassador. This is the first time that a French ambassador will take part in this event hosted each year by the mayors of the two cities.
France, which has already made significant gestures on nuclear disarmament, has developed strong ties with the municipalities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, notably through regular visits by the French ambassador to Japan.
It is joining in these ceremonies to remember all of the victims of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and to reaffirm its desire to bring about a more secure international environment making it possible to accomplish all the goals set forth in the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT), notably with respect to nuclear disarmament.
