Peace process – Settlement activity (January 14, 2014)
France lends its full support to the negotiations under way and to John Kerry’s efforts.
It hopes that the parties will refrain from any gesture likely to undermine the process under way.
France condemns the issuing by the Israeli authorities, on January 10, of invitations to tender for the construction of more than 1,800 homes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, following the approval, on January 5, of the construction of new homes in the settlements of Ofra and Karnei Shomron (West Bank).
It reaffirms that settlement activity is illegal under international law, that it constitutes an obstacle to a just peace based on the two-State solution and fuels tensions on the ground. During his visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories in November 2013, President Hollande called on the Israel authorities to bring a “complete and definitive halt to settlement activity.”
