Middle East peace process - (Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - September 20, 2012)

Q : An Israeli strike has killed two members of Hamas in Rafah and injured another. What’s your response? What’s your assessment of developments in the relations between President Mohamed Morsi of Egypt and Hamas, relations that have been criticized by the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas? Was this topic addressed in the discussions between Mr. Fabius and Mr. Morsi this week?

A : With respect to the first part of your question, France’s position is well known: we’re committed to ensuring that all parties respect the ceasefire in Gaza. We’re monitoring developments in the situation very closely.

Regarding Egyptian-Palestinian relations, we would like Egypt to be able to contribute to inter-Palestinian reconciliation. This must take place under the leadership of President Abbas and in accordance with the principles of the peace process.

Of course, the minister discussed the major regional issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian issue, with the Egyptian authorities.
