Palestinian Territories – Resignation of Mr. Salam Fayyad (Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - April 15, 2013)

Q - In your view, what will be the consequences of Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s resignation?

At a time when efforts to relaunch the peace process are being stepped up, France would like the Palestinians to find ways to resolve their internal differences and to give priority to the path toward stability and unity.

We would also like to pay tribute to Mr. Salam Fayyad’s contribution to building the institutions of the future Palestinian state. This action – to which France is proud of having contributed by organizing in 2007 the International Donors’ Conference for the Palestinian State – enabled the international financial institutions to note that the Palestinian Authority was ready to establish a functional and well-managed state.

We also commend Mr. Salam Fayyad’s record with respect to the management of public finances.

While the Palestinian Authority’s financial crisis is continuing, France reaffirms its attachment to the continuation of sound management practices, which have strengthened the credibility of the Palestinian Authority and earned it the trust of the international community. In this context, there’s also an urgent need to take measures to promote Palestinian economic development and thereby contribute to restoring trust between the parties.
