Situation of the Palestinian detainees on hunger strike (Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - September 19, 2012)

Q : 4 Palestinian prisoners are on hunger strike in order to protest against their administrative detention. One of them is in critical condition. What’s your response?

A : We’re concerned by the situation of the Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike, some of whom in administrative detention are in critical condition.

For humanitarian reasons, we call on the Israeli authorities to take appropriate action as a matter of urgency.

I reaffirm that, on several occasions, we’ve expressed - in a national capacity and together with our European partners - our concerns to the Israeli authorities.

France reaffirms that administrative detention should remain an exception, be of limited duration, and be used in compliance with fundamental guarantees, in particular the rights of defense of the detainee and the right to a fair trial within a reasonable period of time.

We’re continuing to closely monitor developments in the situation, as well as the implementation of the agreement concluded in May between the prison authorities and the prisoners.
