Israel - Construction of new homes in the Gilo settlement of East Jerusalem (October 19, 2012)
France condemns the Israeli Interior Ministry’s approval of building 800 new homes in the Gilo settlement in East Jerusalem. By opening the way to expanding the perimeters of this settlement, this decision represents a provocation in an already-tense context.
France stresses that the Israeli settlement program, in all its forms, is illegal under international law, undermines trust-building between the parties, and constitutes an obstacle to a just peace based on the two-state solution.
We urgently call on the Israeli authorities to reverse this decision and to refrain from any measures to expand settlements and make them permanent.
