Israel – Situation of Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike (February 18, 2013)
We are very worried about the situation of Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike, particularly those in administrative detention in Israel whose health has deteriorated in recent days.
For humanitarian reasons, we call on the Israeli authorities to be sensitive to the risk of a tragic outcome and to take the appropriate measures as a matter of urgency. Several times, both nationally and with our European partners, we have called on the Israeli authorities to respect their international obligations vis-à-vis Palestinian prisoners. We are continuing to do so.
In this regard, France recalls that administrative detention must remain an exceptional measure of limited duration and be carried out with due regard for fundamental safeguards, particularly the prisoner’s right to a defence and the right to a fair trial within a reasonable time.
We are closely following the development of the situation and reiterate our commitment to the implementation of the agreement concluded in May 2012 between prison authorities and prisoners.
