Q : The Israelis are planning to build a university in the settlement of Ariel. What do you think about these plans?
A : France strongly deplores the Israeli authorities’ decision to establish a university in the settlement of Ariel, in the West Bank. This measure, like all those aimed at perpetuating and legitimizing settlement activities in the Palestinian Territories, can only serve to further undermine trust between the parties. We therefore call on Israel to swiftly reverse this decision.
We reaffirm that we condemn settlement activity in the West Bank as well as in East Jerusalem: it is illegal under international law and constitutes an obstacle to achieving a just peace based on the two-State solution.
