Political relations with Ireland are good and France’s capacity for initiative has a strong impact, in which the Irish most often participate. The partnership between France and Ireland is remarkable in more ways than one regarding European affairs. The French and Irish agree on many international and community issues (UN reform, Official Development Assistance, CAP and fisheries, financial perspective, CFSP).
On July 21st, 2008, the President of the Republic paid a visit to Dublin while France held the EU Council presidency, in a difficult context following the Lisbon Treaty referendum. Brian Cowen came to Paris on October 1st and December 5th, 2008 to discuss the EU’s institutional future with the President.
On March 18th, 2011, 10 days after the new Irish government was formed following the early parliamentary elections on February 25th, 2011, Mr. B. Le Maire, Agriculture Minister, received his new Irish counterpart Mr. S. Coveney in Paris. Then Mr. Wauquiez received his Irish counterpart, Mrs. Lucinda Creighton, on May 11th, 2011 in Paris. Alain Juppé received his Irish counterpart, Mr. Eamon Gilmore, on May 24th, 2011 in Paris. Lastly, Mrs. Creighton was received by Mr. Leonetti on December 13th.
