Mosul - France will continue to provide its full support to the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi (5 July 2017)

Q - Do you think the Iraqi authorities have done enough to lay the groundwork for reconciliation with the Sunni minority in the post-Daesh period?

A - The liberation of Mosul is imminent. We owe it to the bravery of the Iraqi forces, backed by the Coalition. Respect by all the parties for the Mosul liberation plan will be vital to the national reconciliation process.

We will be very closely monitoring the parties’ respect for humanitarian law and international human rights law. It is imperative to protect civilians during operations to liberate the city, and this will help break the cycle of violence. A reconciliation effort must begin as soon as there is a cessation of hostilities. The perpetrators of attacks on human rights must be held accountable for their actions in a court of law.

Politically, decisive new gestures will be needed to support this reconciliation, to establish inclusive governance, and to stabilize the liberated areas. In keeping with the Paris conference of October 20 on the stabilization of Mosul, France will continue to provide its full support to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to meet the challenges his country must face.
