Iraq - UN - Adoption of Security Council resolution 2379 on the fight against impunity for crimes committed by Daesh (21.09.17)

France welcomes the Security Council’s adoption, on September 21, of resolution 2379 on the fight against impunity for crimes committed by Daesh in Iraq.

The aim of this text co-sponsored by France is to establish an investigative team to assist the Iraqi authorities. In conjunction with current mechanisms, it is urgent to document the crimes committed in Iraq and to establish accountability for those crimes in an impartial, independent manner. It is also important to be able to use evidence that has been collected in procedures upholding human rights and the rejection of the death penalty.

This investigative team will contribute to efforts by Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi’s government during the phase of stabilization, national reconciliation, and the rebuilding of liberated territories. France supports Iraq in these efforts, without which the victory over terrorism cannot be complete. That is the reason for the €430 million loan granted by France, which Jean-Yves Le Drian confirmed before his trip to Baghdad on August 26.
