Iraq – Recapture of Hatra (26 April 2017)

France welcomes the recapture of the city of Hatra – a UNESCO world heritage site – by Iraqi forces on April 26. Hatra, like Mosul and Nimrud - examples of cultural diversity in the Middle East, was significantly damaged by the Daesh terrorist group, which is resolved to destroy this heritage.

Together with our international coalition partners, we are committed to supporting the Iraqi authorities in the fight against terrorism.

France is fully engaged in the fight against the destruction and looting of archeological treasures. Along with the United Arab Emirates, it initiated the international conference in Abu Dhabi on December 2-3, 2016, on endangered cultural property in conflict zones. With Italy, it also originated UN Security Council resolution 2347 on the fight against the destruction and looting of archeological treasures.

In line with this work, France and the UAR announced, on March 20, the establishment of the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (ALIPH). This mechanism will make it possible to implement concrete measures to protect and restore cultural property at the request of States whose heritage suffered damage in a conflict.
