Iraq – Daesh – Second restricted meeting of the foreign ministers of the coalition against Daesh (Paris, June 2, 2015)

France will host the second restricted meeting of the foreign ministers of the coalition against Daesh (24 participants) on June 2. This meeting, co-chaired by Laurent Fabius, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and John Kerry, falls within the framework of the regular meetings between the members of the coalition.

The meeting will have two main objectives:

  • to discuss the coalition’s strategy, at a time when the situation on the ground is especially fragile, and to reaffirm our shared determination to stop the fanatical Daesh terrorists;
  • to convey a strong message about the need to find lasting political solutions in order to resolve the Iraqi crisis, the only way to effectively combat the terrorist group. The meeting in Paris will provide an opportunity to reaffirm our resolute support for the Iraqi government in their efforts to effectively implement the reforms needed to ensure national reconciliation.

The participants will also discuss the protection of persecuted minorities and the conditions for their return, as announced at the meeting on this issue at the UN Security Council that Mr. Laurent Fabius chaired on March 27. They will also discuss the protection of heritage in danger while the UN General Assembly has just adopted a resolution on this issue. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO and Antonio Guterres, High Commissioner for Refugees, have been invited to participate in these discussions.
