Execution of American journalist James Foley - Statement by Laurent Fabius (August 19, 2014)
I was outraged to learn of the execution of American journalist James Foley, kidnapped in Syria by the “Islamic State.”
If confirmed, this despicable murder would show the true face of this “caliphate of barbarism.” It deserves the strongest possible condemnation on the part of the international community and strengthens our determination to fight against the “Islamic State” in accordance with UNSCR 2170.
At such a painful time, our thoughts go out to the family of this journalist, a true professional who was universally respected in France, and especially to his mother, Diane Foley, who we received at the Quai d’Orsay in April.
France is more committed than ever to promoting the right of journalists to carry out their work under safe conditions. There should be no form of impunity for the perpetrators of these barbaric acts.
