France’s support for the European Commission (March 8, 2012)

Following the three letters of formal notice that it sent to the Hungarian authorities on January 17, the European Commission announced yesterday that it was sending two reasoned opinions relating to the retirement age for judges and the independence of the national data protection agency, requiring them to respond within an accelerated time period of one month.

It also decided to seek further clarification from them regarding the independence of the judiciary and the independence of the central bank, with the same deadline for replying.

We reaffirm our full support for the Commission, the guardian of the Treaties, within the framework of the current proceedings. We urge the Hungarian authorities to comply with the Commission’s demands by making the necessary amendments to the Hungarian legislation.
