Haiti: Appointment of Laurent Lamothe ( May 15, 2012)
France welcomes President Michel Martelly’s appointment of a Haitian Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, who enjoyed strong support in the two chambers of Parliament.
Following the vote on the budget, this appointment is a further sign of national unity which is encouraging.
The formation of a government which has the support of the parliamentarians should allow the authorities to take resolute action to improve the fate of the people, to coordinate and implement major reconstruction projects and to establish effective governance across the country.
All actors involved in Haitian political life must continue their efforts to promote dialogue and consensus-building in the national interest.
France, together with its European and international partners, will continue to support Haiti and to strive to promote the country’s development. We notably want to help consolidate the rule of law and to build strong institutions that serve the Haitian people.
