Laurent Fabius’s visit to Bonn (September 5, 2012)
The minister of foreign affairs visited Bonn september 5 in order to participate, together with his German counterpart, Mr. Westerwelle, in the ceremonies organized to mark the anniversary of the meeting between General de Gaulle and Chancellor Adenauer which took place in this city 50 years ago.
This visit took place in the context of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty (January 22, 2013), which, it has been decided, will be given an especially high profile through the organization of a “Franco-German Year: the 50th Anniversary of the Elysée Treaty” (September 2012 – July 2013), the main theme of which will be youth. This jubilee year will be opened by President Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on September 22 in Ludwigsburg.
In Bonn, the minister had a working lunch with Mr. Westerwelle in Rhöndorf, in the former residence of Chancellor Adenauer. On this occasion, they addressed the major issues of international concern, notably the situation in Syria, in Iran and in the “Arab Spring” countries, as well as European issues. The two ministers went to Bonn Old City Hall in order to attend a folk festival (“Bürgerfest”) organized in honor of Franco-German friendship.
Following the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and the signing of the city’s official guest book (as General de Gaulle also did), the two ministers exchanged views with students, providing an opportunity to highlight the progress made in 50 years and the future prospects of the Franco-German partnership.
