Visit by Mr. Laurent Fabius to Egypt (September 17 and 18, 2012)
Laurent Fabius visited Cairo from September 17 to 18.
This visit reflects France’s determination to lend its full support to the continuation of the democratic transition in Egypt and to work with the newly elected authorities to promote development, democracy and peace within the framework of our long-standing and very friendly relations with the Egyptian people.
The minister had been received by President Morsi, with whom he discussed the continuation of the transition process, the strengthening of our bilateral relations, as well as developments in regional arenas, where Egypt is in the process of resuming its rightful and eminent role. The Syrian crisis, regarding which our two countries share the same goals, has of course been discussed.
Laurent Fabius also met with his counterpart, Mohammed Kamel Amr, and with the Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil el-Araby, with whom he has notably discussed the situation in Syria. The minister had also been received by the grand imam of Al Azhar, Sheik Ahmed el-Tayeb, and met political figures and civil society actors who have played a key role since the revolution of January 25.
Finally, Mr. Fabius received the French community - hard hit by the events of the past few months - to whom he delivered a message of solidarity and support, as well as the representatives of French companies that contribute to the dynamism of our trade.
