Egypt – Proclamation of the results of the constitutional referendum (December 25, 2012)
We take note of the results of Egypt’s constitutional referendum, as proclaimed on december 25 by the electoral commission. We applaud the attitude of the Egyptian people, which made it possible for voting to unfold in a calm atmosphere.
Recent weeks have been marked by strong tensions in Egypt, by major misunderstandings and by denunciations of the irregularities witnessed in a referendum characterized by a low participation rate.
Now that a new phase is beginning in Egypt, all political players must be guided by a single objective: ensuring that the political transition is based on dialogue and a search for compromise, in the interest of all Egyptians. Respect for the rule of law, minority rights and the transparency of the electoral process are key elements, with respect to which France will be vigilant.
Given the concern that has been expressed, it is up to all political players and, first and foremost, President Morsi, to work to rebuild a consensus in Egyptian society.
