France and East Timor
We have excellent relations with Timor-Leste (East Timor). Mr Xanana Gusmão, the current Prime Minister, who was then President of East Timor, and Mr José Ramos Horta, the former President of the Republic, who was then Foreign Minister, visited France in 2003 and 2006. Timor-Leste’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr José-Luis Guterres, visited France in February 2007.
The French Ambassador in Jakarta has been accredited to Timor-Leste since December 2002 and a cooperation office (with an expatriate staff member) was opened in Dili.
Trade is very small. Our cooperation focuses on promoting the rule of law (training of journalists, securing official buildings) in liaison with other donors, including multilateral ones (UNDP). We are also active through European Union programmes.
