Democratic Republic of Congo – Action against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) (February 2, 2015)

France has taken note of the Congolese authorities’ announcement on January 29 regarding the launch of military action against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

This armed group constitutes one of the major threats to peace and stability in the Great Lakes region. While the FDLR had until January 2 to surrender, the UN Security Council found that no progress had been made with respect to the anticipated voluntary disarmament process.

On January 8, the Security Council therefore urged the Democratic Republic of Congo to intervene together with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), in accordance with the mandate set out in resolution 2147.

France urges the DRC authorities to continue their coordination efforts with MONUSCO and to ensure that the operations are conducted in accordance with international law, in particular international humanitarian law and human rights.
