France played a key role in the founding of the first Czechoslovak Republic: creation of the Czechoslovak army in Darney, in the Vosges, when, on June 30th, 1918, President Poincaré gave the Czechoslovak national flag to 6,000 Czech and Slovak legionnaires; creation in Paris, rue Bonaparte, of the provisional Czechoslovak government on September 26th, 1918, recognized by the French Government on the following October 15th. While the long totalitarian period (1939-1989) was marked by the modest level of our relations, the two countries began building closer ties following the “Velvet Revolution” with the Czech Republic’s pre-accession process to the EU.

A strategic partnership was established in June 2008. It was updated on February 11th, 2011, with a new action plan, covering the period 2011-2013. It covers a wide domain encompassing our common priorities. In particular, we should mention the creation of a Franco-Czech energy working group (meeting three times in Prague and Paris), as well as the initiative to improve mutual familiarity by the younger generation (Youth Talent Forum).

The visit by Mr. Necas to Paris (February 10th and 11th, 2011), the first abroad – excluding immediate neighbors and Brussels – since his arrival at the head of the government in July 2010, confirmed the new climate of trust established between the two countries since Prime Minister Jan Fischer visited Paris in May 2010 and Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel Schwarzenberg on September 6th, 2010 and May 25th, 2011 during which he met with his counterparts. The Czech Prime Minister returned to Paris in January 2012.
