Costa Rica – Fight against illicit trafficking in cultural property (May 16, 2012)

On May 16, Mr. Jean-Paul Balzamo, Deputy Director responsible for the fight against fraud, controls policy and legal affairs and disputes, delivered, on behalf of the Directorate General of Customs, to Mr. Carlos Bonilla Sandoval, Costa Rica’s Ambassador to France, 6 archaeological items dating from the pre-Columbian era. These are ceramic objects in the form of animals or humans.

The relationship between France and Costa Rica has traditionally been good, due to a convergence of views on many multilateral subjects (environmental protection, sustainable development, combatting climate change, combatting terrorism and corruption).

The visit (private) by the Ecology Minister in December 2008, followed by the missions of our Ambassador responsible for climate change negotiations, at the time Mr. Brice Lalonde, have provided for establishing more ambitious bilateral collaboration regarding environmental protection. In this manner, our two countries worked together prior to the Copenhagen summit, but also in preparation for COP 16.
