Colombia – Launch of negotiations with the FARC (September 5, 2012)
France welcomes the announcement by Colombia’s President Manuel Santos of the launch of negotiations with the FARC movement aimed at establishing peace in this country that has been scarred by almost 50 years of internal violence.
Colombia is a long-time partner of France. It’s a friendly nation, that has, since its independence, shared with our country close human and cultural ties and an attachment to democratic principals and humanitarian ideals inherited from the Age of Enlightenment. Despite the tragic periods of violence that it has gone through, Colombia remains faithful to these values.
We pay tribute to the determination of President Santos and his government to establish lasting peace in Colombia and urge all parties involved in the conflict to engage actively in the process they’ve been invited to join.
France stands ready to support Colombia in its efforts to restore peace, as it is already doing so through its participation in the action of the Mission to Support the Peace Process, within the framework of the OAS, through its support for the law on reparation for victims and land restitution, and by co-chairing the informal group of States that lend their support to the peace process (G24).
