After a freeze in political relations during the dictatorship, high-level contacts were re-established in 1989. They are now highly sustained. After the earthquake in February 2010, a French scientific, technical, and humanitarian support mission was sent to Chile on March 3rd. Following the Chilean authorities’ request, France donated 1.2 million doses of Sanofi Aventis A H1-N1 influenza vaccines to Chile, a value of €8.1 million.
President Chirac paid a state visit to Santiago in May 2006.
Christine Lagarde, Economy, Industry, and Employment Minister, represented France during Mr. Piñera’s inauguration on March 11th, 2010.
The President of the Republic and President Piñera spoke on the sidelines of the summit on nuclear security in Washington (April 12th-13th, 2010) and during the EU – Latin America and the Caribbean Summit in Madrid (May 17th-18th).
Mrs. Anne-Marie Idrac led a business mission to Chile from July 20th to 22nd, 2010.
In turn, the Chilean President conducted an official visit to France from October 19th to 21st, 2010. The two presidents adopted a joint political declaration formalizing a roadmap for developing bilateral relations. The President of the Republic had received Mr. Piñera, then candidate for Chile’s Presidency, on June 29th, 2009.
President Michelle Bachelet conducted an official visit to France in May 2009. President Lagos was received in Paris by President Chirac in April 2001 and January 2004.
The Foreign Affairs Minister, Alfredo Moreno, met with Mrs. Alliot-Marie on December 8th, 2010. The Ministre d’État received Mr. Moreno on May 31st, 2011. Mr. Alvarez, Energy Minister, came to Paris in October 2011 and met with Mr. Besson. Mr. Felipe Larraín, Finance Minister, met with Christine Lagarde on January 6th, 2011 and held talks in Paris with Mr. Baroin on January 5th, 2012.
Political dialogue is very well maintained, particularly in the context of Chile’s close association in the preparations for France’s presidency of the G20. Moreover, Chile is a long-standing partner with France on the issue of innovative financing for development (chairing the Pilot Group on Innovative Financing for Development in 2010, after France).
