Central African Republic – Attack against the town of Bangassou and the MINUSCA contingent (12 and 13 May 2017)

France utterly condemns the attack against the town of Bangassou and the MINUSCA contingent by armed groups on May 12 and 13, which claimed many civilian casualties and left a Moroccan peacekeeper dead.

This brings the number of peacekeepers killed to six in a week.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and to the Moroccan authorities. Full light must be shed on these heinous acts, which may constitute war crimes, for which the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

France reaffirms its support for the authorities of the Central African Republic and for MINUSCA in implementing its mandate to protect the civilian populations. France is determined to continue, in collaboration with all of its European, African and international partners, its efforts to ensure stability and consolidate peace in the Central African Republic.
