Central African Republic – Statement issued by Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs (December 31, 2012)
The commitments made yesterday by President François Bozizé in the Central African Republic are a step in the right direction. Dialogue and the cessation of hostilities are, more than ever, the priority. I urge all parties to open, without delay, the negotiations due to take place in Libreville, within the framework of the principles reaffirmed by the African Union in its communiqué yesterday.
I again urge the Central African authorities to guarantee the protection of all foreign, French and European nationals. We remain especially vigilant with respect to the safety of our compatriots, which is a priority for us.
Lastly, I call on the Central African authorities to refrain - in the capital - from any action that runs counter to the spirit of dialogue and peace that they have shown, and on the rebel groups to guarantee the safety of the populations in the zones under their control.
