Central African Republic (Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - January 27, 2014)

Q : Is France, like the United States, considering taking targeted sanctions against the perpetrators of violence in the Central African Republic?

A : On France’s initiative, the UN Security Council should adopt a draft resolution tomorrow, which will provide for the introduction of a sanctions regime.

These sanctions target individuals who undermine peace and stability and obstruct the political transition process in the Central African Republic, by fueling violence, violating human rights and international humanitarian law and taking part in the plundering of the country’s resources.

The Security Council will thereby send a very strong message to those individuals who obstruct the joint efforts of the African Union, the UN and the EU to restore stability in the Central African Republic.

France also reaffirms that the introduction of sanctions is on top of the legal proceedings against the perpetrators of human rights violations. All those responsible for atrocities must be held accountable. The fight against impunity is a crucial element of the reconciliation.
