Cultural, scientific and technical cooperation
Our cultural cooperation is based on the Alliance Française, founded in 1986. In addition to language courses (there are approximately 130 students), its action has developed in recent years towards organizing cultural events, in close contact with the embassy (which has no other instrument of influence and sway). In late 2001, French-language instruction was introduced at the university. There are now more than one thousand students learning French, all levels combined (secondary, university and Alliance Française).
Museography is also an important area. Total’s sponsorship made it possible to carry out an archaeological excavation of a 15thcentury Chinese junk that sank off the coast of Brunei. Following an exhibition organized on site, the Sultan opened the “La mémoire engloutie du Brunei” (“Brunei’s Sunken Memory”) exhibition, held in Paris from September 2001 through January 2002 at the Conciergerie. It was the largest event ever organized to acquaint Western audiences with the Sultanate. Cooperation has developed between the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and various French universities (La Rochelle and Montpellier I, in particular) promoting exchanges of students and researchers in the fields of cartography, medicine and pharmacy.
Three cooperation agreements were signed during Brunei’s Education Minister’s visit to France in December 2008, in particular between the UBD on one hand and the Museum of Natural History and the University of Montpellier I on the other hand.
