Brunei

Political relations

France is one of the few European countries, alongside Germany and the UK, to have an embassy in the country. Brunei opened a diplomatic mission in Paris in July 1989, with a resident ambassador since September 1991. The Sultan paid a state visit to France in December 1996, followed by several working visits to Paris. The Sultan made a further official visit to France in June 2008. He also met with the President of the Republic in October 2008 during the ASEM Summit in Beijing, for which France and Brunei were coordinators.

In June 2006, bilateral relations were also marked by the Crown Prince HRH Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiah’s working visit to France, meeting with the President of the Republic.
