Bahrain - Journalist’s sentences (Q&A - Excerpt from the daily press briefing - October 2, 2012)
Q : A short time ago, France congratulated Bahrain on its reform program as well as for modifying a number of sentences handed down to medical personnel from hospitals in Bahrain during the riots. I think the journalists’ sentences have just been confirmed. What’s your response with respect to the sentences that have been handed down? Does this call into question your view regarding the reforms that have been introduced by the King of Bahrain?
A : Indeed, we have received confirmation of the sentences handed down to the Salmaniya Hospital personnel. We were disappointed to learn of the appeals court decision confirming the sentences handed down to these medical personnel.
We expected a lenient sentence consistent with the charges against the defendants while more needs to be done to calm the political situation and establish an atmosphere conducive to dialogue. We regret the fact that the Bahraini justice system has decided otherwise.
