Bahrain – Acquittal of human rights activist Nabeel Rajab (August 22, 2012)
We are relieved to note that Mr. Nabeel Rajab has been acquitted of the charges for his remarks on social networks.
However, we remain extremely concerned about the situation of Mr. Rajab, whose 3-year prison sentence for his participation in demonstrations on August 16 still stands. We hope that this sentence, regarding which we had expressed our unease, will be reviewed after an appeal.
We remain concerned by the ongoing tensions in the Kingdom of Bahrain and reaffirm our deep attachment to the freedom of expression and opinion and to the right to demonstrate peacefully.
We call on the Bahraini authorities to give priority to the appeasement measures, in line with the recommendations of the Bassiouni report.
